Would Batman wear this watch? Maybe while polishing up the Batmobile. Not really something for Bruce Wayne to be seen in on more pedestrian outings. I heard Tiret say something interesting about the watches. They don't want someone thinking about wanting to buy the watch. They would prefer someone get it on an impulse. Wow, way to stand by the "lasting value" of your products. Guess I'll find one of these while waiting to checkout at the super market. "I've been wanting one of these..."

The IWC Pilot’s Replica Watch Automatic

This is potentially the newest version of the RGM 300 Professional Diver's watch. The 300 watch important as being American RGM's first diving watch, and most agree that it was well done. It is a sober looking tool watch with cohesive lines, and a thick parts the communicate strength and quality. The original 300 Diver had lots of merit, including different dial options and a cool Blancpain Fifty Fathoms like canvas strap, or a metal bracelet as seen in the images. The watch has an ETA 2892 automatic movement that sits inside of the massively thick stainless steel case that is water resistant to 2,500 feet (750 meters) and is 42.3mm wide. Everything on the watch looks easy to operate including the large crown and easy to grip rotating bezel.

The timepiece design is actually American. The person who designed it is a great designer who I've worked with myself named Russ Schwenkler, you can check out his site right here. Russ has a good eye for watches and other fashionable/functional machines such as cars and motorcycles.

Normally, I wouldn't dedicated an entire post to just a new "phantom" watches, but this Fortis B-42 Black & Black Automatic Day/Date limited edition watch does something different that I really appreciate. Everything about the watch case and dial are black. Black, and more black. Hence the name of the watch. Fortis wasn't happy just being a run of the mill stealth watch. So it make the hands and day/date windows easy to read! So you get the cool look of an all matte black watch, that you don't need to struggle to read. It seems like such an obvious thing, but I haven't see it before. Plus, the hands are covered in SuperLumiNova, so they will glow (actually, the dial hour markers are also lume most likely, and glow a sort of dull gray).

Timely Game-Changers!

The Red8 name is also part of Chinese culture. Red being associated with wealth and prosperity, while 8 being a lucky number of sorts with special meaning associated with it. Red8 did something that I've never seen before. That being the use of the large red ABS plastic crown. ABS plastic is very hard and solid feeling. It also looks like tasty red candy. The number "8" is done in relief on the side. Sure I worry a bit about the crown scratching, but that is just part of the character of the watch. Realize that the entire crown is not actually plastic. There is a standard metal crown that has a red plastic cap over it. It is a fun style and certainly goes with the theme. No complaints here.

When I was recently in Japan, the Seiko folk made sure we knew all about the Seiko Quartz Astron (ref. 35SQ) watch. For whatever reason, the knowledge that Seiko was the inventor of the world's first quartz movement powered watch has eluded me (until then that is). Coincidentally, this December 2009 is the 40th anniversary of the Seiko Astron quartz watch. I got to check out one of the original Seiko Astron watches. Two of the images here are mine that I took of a Seiko Astron watch back in Japan. The watch itself is a testament to Seiko having help up so well after 40 years. It looked as though it was made no more than 5 years ago. The retro style of the watch is surprisingly durable as the look of the watch seems to meld well with today's popular vintage looks. The 18k gold case itself is tonneau in shape with that distressed-like metal textured look that used to be popular. Then you have a smoothly polished dial and a clean functional face. At the time, the design was pretty new for Seiko who had been essentially making the same style watch case for a decade. This was back in 1969.

The construction of the unit involves a shiny black case sitting on four legs. A mirror on top of which a raised circuit board is mounted, and the rest you can easily visually deduce. The Futura is very artistic in my mind. I wouldn't actually call it futuristic at all, but I suppose it is in comparison to some of the classic looking wood winder units. Instead it is a more "tech friendly" device, proud of its electronics. Thematically similar to a skeletonized watch, only here you have electronics and lights, as opposed to gears and springs. There are actually four blue LED lights on the board that are more or less decorative. they actually have various settings and can blink and different speeds. The point of the lights it to make the unit look more "spacey," and in that it succeeds. You'll feel like you are in a space ship with the Futura winder being on in a dark room. You can easily turn the lights off too. I had to do this as I keep my watches in my bedroom and the bright blue blinking lights made me feel like there was a police car in the room. Turning the lights off involved removing the power to the unit and restarting it to put it in settings mode. Not a big deal, but it did involve resetting the time. Still, I was very pleased that Orbita realized that it would be a feature people would want to have some control over - something I wishes the makers of my computer thought of as it seems to twirp and blink with various lights more often than R2-D2.

An Overview of all Omega Speedmaster Apollo XI Models

When John and I recently discussed these awards on HourTime (Episode 3), we mentioned that there should be some awards for affordable watches. They can still be luxury ones on the mix. How about up to ,000? You could have 3-4 categories (classy, sport, womens, complicated, etc...) and then do each of them for various price points. Up to 0, up to ,000, up to 00, up to ,000. That would work out well right? Not that I have a problem with events like the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve, but I think there is just too much nice stuff that they are leaving out.

Look at the sapphire crystal, and you'll see that it is meant to emulate the raised and rounded look of an acrylic crystal, but it is in fact sapphire. You then have the chronograph pushers that are just like those seen on models from the 1940's - though very useful still. There is also the size of the watch that is 41mm wide. This might actually seem quite medium by today's standards, but is a good size for those many people who rightfully worry about watches that are too big looking on their wrist.

You don't see Universal Geneve watches in the US to often, but they are pretty common in Europe. I was surprised to see a number of them being sold when I was in Germany. So if you don't see them for sale in the US, you merely need to take a trip online. Wait, you are already there. These Microtor watches by Universal Geneve are going to be officially launched at Baselworld 2010 in April, so wait until then if you can't bear to live without one.

Seiko Izul, The Coolest Watch You've Never Heard Of (And Can't Get) Watch Releases

Here is the last watch I wanted to mention that I saw while with TX and it is a women's model. You have the TX World Time model again, but in a different case that is tapered to be wider at the base than at the dial. It think it is based on the popular Louis Vuitton Tambour watch case. A well make thick white leather strap goes with the white dial that has a world map with each continent in a nice girly pastel color. I think this is a good watch for the woman that likes a nice style and some function to match. For me, it feels like a good gift to get a lady because I can feel confident that the watch is "cool" and that she will appreciate the feminine character of the style. It is not a little watch either at about 45mm wide. Also a new model so I am not sure of the reference number but the price should be about 5.

Omega Speedmaster '57 Caliber 9300 Reader's Contribution

Richard Marcinko is proud to put his name on the watch, as it satisfies his highly demanding needs (and personality). In two colors with a series of available straps or a metal bracelet, there is one for any highly demanding adventurer or military personnel. What is the most impressive is how Rogue Warrior Watches was able to keep down the prices. Unlike most watch makers who make hardcore rugged watches, Rogue Warrior Watches understands that people with average budgets need to afford the watches. The Red Cell watches start at 0 (on a rubber, velcro bund, or camo leather strap), or 0 on a matching metal bracelet. Interestingly, the DLC coated watches are the same price. For all that you get, the price is extremely friendly if I may say. The watches come in a nice presentation box, and are for the (real or metaphorical) blood thirsty, bad-ass, plane jumping, soldier of fury in us all (that need a good watch to go along with the job).

Angular Momentum's newest timepiece collection is based on something very Japanese. Maybe Seiko or Citizen will be pissed? Angular Momentum's Urushi watch collection uses just that, the ancient natural Japanese lacquer. Urushi actually comes from a tree and is likely a specialized sap from a tree native to Japan, sometimes called the Varnish or Lacquer tree. For centuries, it seems that the compound has been used for various purposes, and still used today for decorative purposes. Angular Momentum has taken Urushi and created a series of watch that embody various manners of Japanese symbolism on them. The sap dries to be very hard (like plastic), and is very smooth. The sap itself is not black and red naturally when it dries as you see on the watches. Instead it is colored with iron or ferric oxide often for the black and red colors you see. It is quite an amazing natural compound, and is hard to believe it is not synthetic.

Astronaut's Speedmaster Professional Being Auctioned

In the world of watches, protecting a design under an intellectual property theory is very tough. That is because most of the watch design is considered functional, difficult to remove from the "purely aesthetic" elements, and mostly under the realm of patent law to protect, if at all. There is also the concept of designs that cannot be protected because they have been around so long, as countless watch designs have utilized them. So for all intents and purposes, most watch designs are in the "public domain," because it has "all been done before."

Let me stop for a moment to make a few clarifications. One, I don't have a problem per se with Tourneau. Two, there are plenty of good people at Tourneau from sales people to managers. Three, I voice these sentiments as a message to Tourneau because I genuinely want them to improve. They have so much to work with.
